Networking - The supportive way

Last week I had the pleasure to attend a networking event that is just for women in business. One of the nice things about an event like this, which is held monthly, is that there is only one of each business type so you don't get five women selling makeup or several women who do real estate.

This not only makes the event more interesting, but a more relaxed environment. You don't feel like you have to do your presentation better than the other home stager or makeup person...or whatever.

This is what I was thinking it would be like......

Luckily, it was nothing like that. But I was still really nervous. As you know from prior posts, I took the Dale Carnegie course when I worked at the life sucking corporation old job. And while that has helped me in many situations, this was a new type. Standing up for five minutes and talking about my businesses should be easy, not hard.

And as I listened to others talk about their business, I heard the passion in many of their voices. I heard how much they love what they do and I heard how I could help them. Maybe not with a purchase (although that's good) but by referrals. So they handed out cards and flyers and catalogs, but there was no hard sell. And there were some really good questions asked as well.

No, not just about prices.

So up came my turn and of course I went after two women has just spoken passionately about their businesses and well, how do I follow that?

With an opening joke of course. (Sure hope it was funny, I don't remember). I went on to discuss both the home staging/redesign business and the Cookie Lee Jewelry business. It went well, I even had questions asked. I asked for referrals - home sellers, realtors, people looking to redo a room in their home, etc.

Then afterwards, it was chatting and mixing time. I really enjoyed this and look forward to participating again in the coming months.

Not for the referrals, but for the supportive way of networking.

Isn't it funny that most of what I have not done involves some physical labor?

So what on this list have you done?

Time Wasters

I have always been someone who procrastinates.

I can waste time in so many ways and sometimes I don't even realize that I am doing it. I will swear to you that I am working on something, but there are five other items spread out in front of me as well.

Some of my favorite time wasters?

Straightening up..my desk, the piles I make, the bed, clothes...almost anything!

Reorganizing - like straightening up but with a purpose (yeah, right)

Computer games...Freecell, poker, mainly card games.

and the big one? Well, Facebook of course. I can log in to FB, look up and it's 45 minutes later. How does that happen?

This year I am working on overcoming this and sticking to my day schedule much more. Of course forced physical therapy appointments (thanks to my olympic curling accident fall down the steps) certainly help you to plan your day, but I am working to continue that all the time.

For example, yesterday I had a doctor's appointment at 3:00pm, so I was there at 2:45pm and got out in time to do some bookkeeping work that I wanted to finish. Today my planned schedule includes food shopping, working on my bike, bookkeeping items and realtor visits. So I need to put those items into an order that works and leaves some time wasting space as well.

Let's see how that works....

8:45 Showered & Dressed
9:15 Gather materials for Realtor visits
10:00 WW Meeting
11:30 Realtor Visits
1:30 Back Home
2:00 Bike or Bookkeeping (or Both)
5:00 Grocery Shopping

That seems to work - I'll have to let you know later.

If I don't get stuck on Facebook!

Outdoor Furniture - Upgrade time?

With the snow melting and spring on the horizon, it is time to think outdoor spaces and furniture. Here are several tips for deciding about replacement, refurbishment or purchasing your outdoor furniture.

Start by determining your outdoor needs and assessing what you already own. Are you someone who entertains frequently? Do you have a large family or group of friends that need seating? Will you be serving meals? Now write all of this down and prioritize the list - what is the most important item? If it's dining, then a table and chairs should be top most.

Now that you have your needs assessed, look around at what you already own. Determine the quality state of your furniture. Is the table wobbly or rusted, or are seat cushions worn, for example. If the chairs are in great shape, consider checking into new cushions, such as these http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/11/garden/11outdoor.html?ref=garden, Doug and Gene Meyer’s latest project.

If you determine that you need new furniture, then your next step must be what type - teak, metal or some new hybrid? Will be be outside all the time or will it be covered? This site, http://www.poynters.co.nz/pages/Types-of-outdoor-furniture.html , does a wonderful job of discussing all type without offering any commentary on specific manufacturers. It provides the facts without the editorial comments.

How much space do you have? As with any project of this type, it would be a benefit to draw out your space to scale and then use furniture cutouts to define the space. Fitting in a grill or a child's table or sandbox may be a consideration. You also need to leave enough space for walking around the furniture and for chairs in and out of the dining table.

It is always a good idea to consult a professional if you are unsure of how the space layout may work or if you are unsure of where to shop. A decorator, home stager or landscape designer can help with this process.

If you choose to do it yourself remember these three simple points - layout the space, determine your priorities and ascertain the best materials. This will ensure your outdoor furniture is as usable as your indoor furniture.

P.S. I am doing a Spring Swap - Sound like fun? Then join me.....

This music is the story of my teen years

Do you have a year in particular that every song is just a great memory? Well this list is it for me.

Even now when I hear these songs, I am transported back to 1973, middle school dances, 8th grade graduation and a summer of wonder knowing that I would be in high school shortly.

Stuck in the Middle with you - reminds me of kissing my first boyfriend at a party. The Right Thing to do - listening to Carly Simon in my room late at night thinking she was the only on who understood me. Dances that played "Slow Dance" songs like Break up to Make up or Killing me Softly.

Do you have a year that you'll never forget and the song that make is special?
